SAN ASENSIO, which is 31 kilometers away from Logroño, is part of the main core of wine-producing towns and villages in the RIOJA ALTA area. It has a historic quarter with an interesting selection of grand, old houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The CHURCH of the ASCENSION, from which SAN ASENSIO takes its name, was built of ashlar stone between the 15th and 16th centuries. The tower has three sections and was built in the 17th century.

BARRIO DE LAS CUEVAS (CAVE DISTRICT), where EL ARCA DE NOÉ is found, in the hill named CERRILLO VERVALLE and forms the heart of the wine-making tradition in SAN ASENSIO. It is one of the most emblematic districts of its kind in La Rioja with over 200 wineries from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, which together form a network of interconnected cellars, caves and passageways.

DAVALILLO, the hill skirted by the River Ebro that overlooks the whole area with splendid views, is 6 km from SAN ASENSIO and has an 18th century CASTLE on its peak, alongside a 16th century CHAPEL and the remains of the mediaeval village of Davalillo, whose population shrank as that of San Asensio, a town built on Crown land, grew. The move from one to the other is commemorated every year in April and September with a festive walk up the hill to Davalillo. The Monastery of La Estrella still conserves some of its initial 15th century features such as the Door of the Knights, the Fountain of the King and the gothic cloister.
